Tualatin, Oregon Diminished Value
Your repair bill tells only part of the story.
You picked up your vehicle, the damaged panels are repaired, and the insurance company paid the shop. But what would a buyer think after learning about the accident? For Tualatin vehicle owners, that remaining loss deserves its own review. Diminished Value of Oregon examines the vehicle, the documented repairs and relevant market evidence to prepare an appraisal supporting your diminished value claim. Start with the full free estimate form so we can see the facts together.

Document the value. Support your claim.
A repair supplement can change the picture. Keep the whole record.
An initial estimate may describe damage visible before disassembly. Later supplements can show additional parts, repair operations and measurements. An appraisal based only on the first document could miss important facts. Send the estimate of record, every supplement you have, damage photos and the final invoice when available. We use that record to distinguish the work performed from the separate question of what the repaired vehicle is worth.
Identify the vehicle precisely
Include the VIN, trim, mileage at the loss, factory options and pre-accident condition. A different engine, drivetrain or equipment package can make a seemingly similar listing a poor comparison.
Preserve the repair sequence
Keep the original estimate even after a revised estimate arrives. Label photos taken before repairs, during disassembly and at delivery so the damage and repair history can be followed.
Include the insurer’s position
Upload a written diminished value offer or denial if you have one. Explain whether repairs are complete and whether additional damage or repair concerns remain unresolved.
A repaired car is not always a restored financial position
Are you a victim of “friendly fraud”?
A friendly promise to fix your car can make it sound as though the entire loss has been handled. But when someone else causes the collision, paying for the repairs is not doing you a favor. You had an undamaged vehicle before the crash. If it now carries a collision history that reduces its value, a paid repair invoice has not put that missing value back. That is why we ask: are you a victim of friendly fraud?
Accident history can leave a significant loss of value, especially when structural damage is involved. A car that looks good again may still bring less when you sell or trade it.
That is the loss we help you document. At Diminished Value of Oregon, we produce an appraisal to help you pursue the remaining loss of value and work toward being made whole.

Document it now. Protect the record of what happened.
Start with safety, then preserve the details while they are fresh. You can gather the rest of the appraisal paperwork after you are out of danger.
- Get safe and get help. Stop and check for injuries. Call 911 for injuries or immediate danger and follow the dispatcher’s directions. If no one appears injured, your vehicle is operable and moving it off the roadway is safe, move it nearby. Do not delay safety steps to take pictures.
- Capture the whole scene from a safe position. Photograph the vehicles’ positions and proximity, the impact areas, lanes, signals, street signs, debris and relevant road conditions. Include the other vehicle’s damage and license plate without entering traffic or confronting anyone.
- Record your vehicle inside and out. Take wide shots and close-ups of every side, plus a slow walk-around video if safe. Photograph the interior, airbags, dashboard warnings, odometer mileage and VIN. Do not crawl under an unstable vehicle or touch damaged electrical components.
- Exchange information and preserve witnesses. Record driver names, addresses, license and plate details, insurance companies and policy numbers. Ask witnesses for contact information, note the time and location, and save the police incident number if one is assigned. Keep identifying information private.
- Back up the originals. Save unedited photos, videos and dashcam footage before automatic deletion overwrites them. Write a factual account while your memory is fresh. Keep towing, storage and repair records together, along with dated insurer messages.
- Report the collision and start your file. Notify your insurer promptly and complete required police and DMV reports. Once safe, use our estimate form to provide vehicle details, photos and the repair paperwork available so far. Add supplements and the final invoice as repairs progress.
Oregon reporting reminder
When must you file with Oregon DMV?
File within 72 hours if anyone is injured or killed; your vehicle has more than $2,500 in damage; any vehicle has over $2,500 in damage and any vehicle is towed from the scene; or damage to nonvehicle property exceeds $2,500.
A police report does not replace your DMV report. If you missed the deadline, submit it as soon as possible. Save a copy and your submission confirmation. DMV provides online and paper filing options.
Failing to file a required report can have consequences. ORS 811.725 makes driver failure to report a Class B traffic violation, which can carry a fine. DMV also warns that failure to file can lead to a suspension notice. Reportable collisions also require immediate police notification; use 911 for emergencies and the police non-emergency channel otherwise.

Tualatin · Local context
One Tualatin claim can involve more than one county or local market.
Tualatin extends into Washington and Clackamas counties. This page covers the city as one community, rather than treating a county line as a boundary for vehicle value. A vehicle owner may arrange repairs in Tualatin, compare replacement vehicles elsewhere in the southwest Portland metro area, and work with an insurer based outside Oregon. The appraisal should explain which market evidence fits the actual vehicle instead of assuming a nationwide average or a mailing ZIP code answers the question.
- Use the actual collision location in your records. Preserve the street, nearest intersection or highway exit, direction of travel and the investigating agency’s report number when available. Your home address and repair shop address may be in different jurisdictions.
- The resources below include a Tualatin repair facility on SW Teton Avenue and a separate nearby option in Tigard. Compare repair capabilities and written estimates, not simply whether an insurer has listed a shop in its network.
- Tualatin agency offices on SW Borland Road and SW Nyberg Street can help their customers with policy questions and claims contact information. A retail agent’s office is not automatically the address where a liability adjuster wants your appraisal delivered.
- Comparisons from Tigard, Beaverton or Portland may be useful when they match the vehicle and relevant market. That does not mean every listing across those communities is equivalent, or that all Tualatin vehicles lose the same percentage after an accident.

Your vehicle. Your repair-shop choice.
You do not have to choose the insurer's preferred body shop.
Oregon DFR explains that an insurer cannot require you to use a particular repair shop. You can choose the shop you want. Whether you are dealing with your insurer or the at-fault driver's insurer, do not mistake a referral to its repair network for a requirement to use it.
A recommendation is allowed. The choice is yours. If you prefer another shop, state that clearly and ask the adjuster to coordinate the estimate and repair review with your chosen shop. Before authorizing work, confirm what the insurer will pay and what charges, if any, you would owe. Shop choice does not automatically resolve disagreements about repair prices.
You can say: “Thank you for the recommendation. I have chosen my repair shop. Please explain the next steps for coordinating the repair estimate with them.”

Working with an adjuster: courteous, clear and assertive
- Be polite without giving up your position. Yelling, insults and repeated confrontations can make an already difficult conversation harder. A calm, specific request keeps the focus on your evidence and the next action.
- Ask one clear question at a time. For example: “What documents do you still need to review my diminished value claim?” Ask who will review them and when you should expect a response.
- Confirm important conversations in writing. Include your claim number, the date, the documents discussed and the agreed next step. Keep a simple log of contacts, submissions and replies.
- Separate repair payment from diminished value. Ask whether the remaining loss of vehicle value has been considered. Request the reason in writing if the insurer disputes that loss, and provide the appraisal and supporting records for review.
- Follow up professionally. If a promised response date passes, send a brief follow-up referencing your earlier request. Ask for supervisor review when needed. Courtesy does not require accepting an unanswered question or an unexplained decision.
- Read before agreeing. Ask what a proposed payment or release covers and whether it would close the property-damage claim, including diminished value. Get clarification before signing anything you do not understand.
A useful follow-up: “Thank you for reviewing my claim. I submitted the requested documents on [date]. Please confirm receipt, identify anything else needed, and let me know when I can expect your written response.”

Oregon protections worth knowing before you close your claim
Repairing the vehicle and restoring its value are separate questions
In Gonzales v. Farmers Insurance Co. (2008), the Oregon Supreme Court held that the policy at issue required restoring the vehicle to its pre-loss condition or compensating for the remaining reduction in value when repairs could not do so. This was a decision about that policy, not a blanket rule for every policy. Its practical lesson: a paid repair invoice alone does not answer every value question.
For your claim, keep the complete repair record and ask the insurer to explain its position on any remaining loss. An appraisal supplies evidence about the value.
Read the Oregon Supreme Court decision ↗You have protections when choosing a repair shop
ORS 746.280 prohibits an insurer from requiring a particular repairer as a condition of recovery by its insured under a motor vehicle liability policy. Before recommending a shop, the insurer must give the required notice about your choice. Choosing another shop does not automatically mean every requested charge must be paid.
Ask the shop for a complete final repair file, including supplements and structural repair documentation when relevant. Those records also help with the diminished value review.
ORS 746.280: repair-shop choice ↗Your claim deserves an investigation and an explanation
ORS 746.230 prohibits unfair settlement practices, including failure to act promptly on claim communications, denial without a reasonable investigation, and failure to promptly explain the policy, factual or legal basis for a denial.
Keep dated copies of your submissions and the insurer’s replies. If diminished value is rejected, ask for the reason in writing and include that response with your estimate request.
ORS 746.230: claim-handling standards ↗For a total loss, ask for the complete valuation report
Oregon DFR says insurers must provide the valuation or appraisal reports used to value your totaled vehicle. Check the trim, mileage, options, condition and comparable vehicles. Record errors and send the full report through our free total loss claim review form.

Could your repair estimate show structural damage?
You do not have to understand every code before requesting a diminished value estimate. Start with the line-item descriptions, the labor categories and the legend at the end of your repair paperwork. Then send the complete document through our form.
Look beyond the bumper and paint
Look for work involving rails, aprons, pillars, rocker panels, floor pans, crossmembers or the firewall. Read whether the line calls for repair, replacement, measuring or pulling. These entries deserve attention when reviewing the extent of the damage.
Check the estimate's own legend
In the CCC sample, a lowercase s following a part price identifies a structural component; F following labor identifies frame labor, and S identifies structural labor. In the Audatex sample, message code 07 identifies a structural part. Formats differ, so use the legend on your document.
HSS means high-strength steel. It describes the material; it is not, by itself, proof that the part was damaged.
Include every supplement
The first estimate may not show everything discovered during repairs. Supplements record added, changed or deleted work. Send the final estimate or invoice with all supplements so the review does not miss rail work, structural replacements or other damage found later.
These are clues to review, not a dollar-value calculation. A setup-and-measure entry alone does not establish structural damage. The actual components, operations, photos and repair findings tell the fuller story. Repair cost and diminished value are separate amounts.

Was the vehicle declared a total loss instead?
If the insurer decides not to repair the vehicle, the main valuation question changes. Gather its complete total loss valuation report, the vehicles it compared, the adjustment details and its offer. Our free total loss claim review examines that information against your vehicle’s specifications and pre-loss condition. Use this route for a totaled vehicle, rather than requesting a post-repair diminished value appraisal.
Who is handling the total loss claim?
My insurance company
Your policy may provide an appraisal process for a disagreement over vehicle value. We can review the valuation and the relevant policy wording before discussing an appraisal assignment. Value, fault and coverage are separate questions.

An independent appraisal can provide evidence supporting your position on value. Do not assume you can invoke the other driver's policy appraisal clause. A report does not compel payment or resolve liability.

Tualatin diminished value questions
Do I need separate appraisals for the Washington and Clackamas portions of Tualatin?
A county boundary by itself does not require two appraisals of the same vehicle and accident. Provide the actual accident location, your vehicle details and the claim documents. This page serves Tualatin as one community.
My original estimate showed minor damage, but the supplement is much larger. Which should I send?
Send both, along with later supplements and the final invoice if available. The original estimate shows what was known initially; supplements help explain damage discovered later. Repair cost alone is not the diminished value amount.
Does a line marked HSS mean the car has structural damage?
HSS describes high-strength steel. It does not, by itself, establish which component was damaged or how it was repaired. The part description, operation, estimate legend and repair documentation need to be read together. Include the complete pages rather than just the marked line.
Can I use a repair shop outside Tualatin?
You can choose your repair facility. An insurer may recommend a network shop, but you do not have to accept that recommendation. Confirm the authorized repair scope and any disputed charges in writing before work begins. The local listings here are optional resources.
Should I send the appraisal to one of the insurance agents listed here?
Ask the assigned claims representative which submission channel and claim number to use. Local agents can help their own customers locate claims contacts, but the listings are not a claims mailing directory. Keep a copy and proof of submission.
What should I do first if I do not know whether an appraisal is worthwhile?
Complete the free diminished value estimate form. Include what you know now and explain which documents are still pending. That gives us the information needed to discuss whether a paid appraisal makes sense for your vehicle.
