Beaverton, Oregon Diminished Value Claims & Appraisals

Your car is back. Is all of its value?

A repaired vehicle can still carry an accident history that affects what a buyer will pay. If someone else caused the damage, don't assume the repair check answers the diminished value question. Start with a free estimate from Diminished Value of Oregon.

Document the value. Support your claim.

Turn ‘my car is worth less’ into an evidence-based appraisal.

Your concern is understandable. The next step is to establish what the damage and repair history mean for this particular vehicle. We use the information you provide to assess the assignment, explain the appraisal process and identify the records needed to support the value opinion.

Start with the free DV estimate. Purchase an appraisal only after its scope and fee have been explained.

A repaired car is not always a restored financial position

Are you a victim of “friendly fraud”?

Someone else hits your car in Beaverton, and suddenly you're the one dealing with the loss. Everyone is so friendly: ‘Don't worry. We'll fix your car. We'll take care of you.’ But fixing damage that should never have happened is not doing you a favor. If your repaired vehicle is still worth less because of that accident, you have not been made whole.

Accident history can leave a significant loss of value, especially when structural damage is involved. A car that looks good again may still bring less when you sell or trade it.

That is the loss we help you document. At Diminished Value of Oregon, we produce an appraisal to help you pursue the remaining loss of value and work toward being made whole.

Just had an accident?

Document it now. Protect the record of what happened.

Start with safety, then preserve the details while they are fresh. You can gather the rest of the appraisal paperwork after you are out of danger.

  1. Get safe and get help. Stop and check for injuries. Call 911 for injuries or immediate danger and follow the dispatcher’s directions. If no one appears injured, your vehicle is operable and moving it off the roadway is safe, move it nearby. Do not delay safety steps to take pictures.
  2. Capture the whole scene from a safe position. Photograph the vehicles’ positions and proximity, the impact areas, lanes, signals, street signs, debris and relevant road conditions. Include the other vehicle’s damage and license plate without entering traffic or confronting anyone.
  3. Record your vehicle inside and out. Take wide shots and close-ups of every side, plus a slow walk-around video if safe. Photograph the interior, airbags, dashboard warnings, odometer mileage and VIN. Do not crawl under an unstable vehicle or touch damaged electrical components.
  4. Exchange information and preserve witnesses. Record driver names, addresses, license and plate details, insurance companies and policy numbers. Ask witnesses for contact information, note the time and location, and save the police incident number if one is assigned. Keep identifying information private.
  5. Back up the originals. Save unedited photos, videos and dashcam footage before automatic deletion overwrites them. Write a factual account while your memory is fresh. Keep towing, storage and repair records together, along with dated insurer messages.
  6. Report the collision and start your file. Notify your insurer promptly and complete required police and DMV reports. Once safe, use our estimate form to provide vehicle details, photos and the repair paperwork available so far. Add supplements and the final invoice as repairs progress.

Oregon reporting reminder

When must you file with Oregon DMV?

File within 72 hours if anyone is injured or killed; your vehicle has more than $2,500 in damage; any vehicle has over $2,500 in damage and any vehicle is towed from the scene; or damage to nonvehicle property exceeds $2,500.

A police report does not replace your DMV report. If you missed the deadline, submit it as soon as possible. Save a copy and your submission confirmation. DMV provides online and paper filing options.

Failing to file a required report can have consequences. ORS 811.725 makes driver failure to report a Class B traffic violation, which can carry a fine. DMV also warns that failure to file can lead to a suspension notice. Reportable collisions also require immediate police notification; use 911 for emergencies and the police non-emergency channel otherwise.

Beaverton · Local context

Beaverton, Oregon has its own local market context

Beaverton is a Portland suburb in Washington County, but a shared metro area does not make every vehicle market identical. Available inventory, buyer preferences and the mix of vehicles being offered can differ between Beaverton, central Portland, Southern Oregon and communities across the Washington border. A useful appraisal evaluates the market relevant to your vehicle rather than treating a statewide or national average as your answer.

  • The right comparisons account for make, model, trim, mileage, equipment, condition and accident history. Geography is part of that analysis, not a reason to assign an automatic percentage.
  • Ask your body shop for the final invoice, every repair supplement, damage photos and any structural measurements or alignment records. These help explain what happened beyond the visible panels.
  • If your repairs were completed in Hillsboro, Tigard or Portland, include those records too. The shop location does not replace the need to evaluate the market for your specific vehicle.
  • For electric or driver-assistance-equipped vehicles, include battery-related repair documentation and calibration records when applicable. Separate repair completion and safety documentation from the appraisal of remaining value.

Regional context: Metro's cities and counties.

Your vehicle. Your repair-shop choice.

You do not have to choose the insurer's preferred body shop.

Oregon DFR explains that an insurer cannot require you to use a particular repair shop. You can choose the shop you want. Whether you are dealing with your insurer or the at-fault driver's insurer, do not mistake a referral to its repair network for a requirement to use it.

A recommendation is allowed. The choice is yours. If you prefer another shop, state that clearly and ask the adjuster to coordinate the estimate and repair review with your chosen shop. Before authorizing work, confirm what the insurer will pay and what charges, if any, you would owe. Shop choice does not automatically resolve disagreements about repair prices.

You can say: “Thank you for the recommendation. I have chosen my repair shop. Please explain the next steps for coordinating the repair estimate with them.”

Working with an adjuster: courteous, clear and assertive

  • Be polite without giving up your position. Yelling, insults and repeated confrontations can make an already difficult conversation harder. A calm, specific request keeps the focus on your evidence and the next action.
  • Ask one clear question at a time. For example: “What documents do you still need to review my diminished value claim?” Ask who will review them and when you should expect a response.
  • Confirm important conversations in writing. Include your claim number, the date, the documents discussed and the agreed next step. Keep a simple log of contacts, submissions and replies.
  • Separate repair payment from diminished value. Ask whether the remaining loss of vehicle value has been considered. Request the reason in writing if the insurer disputes that loss, and provide the appraisal and supporting records for review.
  • Follow up professionally. If a promised response date passes, send a brief follow-up referencing your earlier request. Ask for supervisor review when needed. Courtesy does not require accepting an unanswered question or an unexplained decision.
  • Read before agreeing. Ask what a proposed payment or release covers and whether it would close the property-damage claim, including diminished value. Get clarification before signing anything you do not understand.

A useful follow-up: “Thank you for reviewing my claim. I submitted the requested documents on [date]. Please confirm receipt, identify anything else needed, and let me know when I can expect your written response.”

Oregon protections worth knowing before you close your claim

Repairing the vehicle and restoring its value are separate questions

In Gonzales v. Farmers Insurance Co. (2008), the Oregon Supreme Court held that the policy at issue required restoring the vehicle to its pre-loss condition or compensating for the remaining reduction in value when repairs could not do so. This was a decision about that policy, not a blanket rule for every policy. Its practical lesson: a paid repair invoice alone does not answer every value question.

For your claim, keep the complete repair record and ask the insurer to explain its position on any remaining loss. An appraisal supplies evidence about the value.

You have protections when choosing a repair shop

ORS 746.280 prohibits an insurer from requiring a particular repairer as a condition of recovery by its insured under a motor vehicle liability policy. Before recommending a shop, the insurer must give the required notice about your choice. Choosing another shop does not automatically mean every requested charge must be paid.

Ask the shop for a complete final repair file, including supplements and structural repair documentation when relevant. Those records also help with the diminished value review.

Your claim deserves an investigation and an explanation

ORS 746.230 prohibits unfair settlement practices, including failure to act promptly on claim communications, denial without a reasonable investigation, and failure to promptly explain the policy, factual or legal basis for a denial.

Keep dated copies of your submissions and the insurer’s replies. If diminished value is rejected, ask for the reason in writing and include that response with your estimate request.

For a total loss, ask for the complete valuation report

Oregon DFR says insurers must provide the valuation or appraisal reports used to value your totaled vehicle. Check the trim, mileage, options, condition and comparable vehicles. Record errors and send the full report through our free total loss claim review form.

Understand your repair paperwork

Could your repair estimate show structural damage?

You do not have to understand every code before requesting a diminished value estimate. Start with the line-item descriptions, the labor categories and the legend at the end of your repair paperwork. Then send the complete document through our form.

01

Look beyond the bumper and paint

Look for work involving rails, aprons, pillars, rocker panels, floor pans, crossmembers or the firewall. Read whether the line calls for repair, replacement, measuring or pulling. These entries deserve attention when reviewing the extent of the damage.

02

Check the estimate's own legend

In the CCC sample, a lowercase s following a part price identifies a structural component; F following labor identifies frame labor, and S identifies structural labor. In the Audatex sample, message code 07 identifies a structural part. Formats differ, so use the legend on your document.

HSS means high-strength steel. It describes the material; it is not, by itself, proof that the part was damaged.

03

Include every supplement

The first estimate may not show everything discovered during repairs. Supplements record added, changed or deleted work. Send the final estimate or invoice with all supplements so the review does not miss rail work, structural replacements or other damage found later.

These are clues to review, not a dollar-value calculation. A setup-and-measure entry alone does not establish structural damage. The actual components, operations, photos and repair findings tell the fuller story. Repair cost and diminished value are separate amounts.

Who is handling the total loss claim?

My insurance company

Your policy may provide an appraisal process for a disagreement over vehicle value. We can review the valuation and the relevant policy wording before discussing an appraisal assignment. Value, fault and coverage are separate questions.

The other driver's insurer

An independent appraisal can provide evidence supporting your position on value. Do not assume you can invoke the other driver's policy appraisal clause. A report does not compel payment or resolve liability.

Beaverton diminished value questions

Can there be diminished value even when the repair looks good?

Possibly. Appearance alone does not establish market value. The vehicle's history, damage, repairs and market evidence must be considered. A remaining loss is something to investigate and document, not assume.

Does a vehicle-history report determine the amount?

No. A history report can be useful context, but it is not a dollar-value appraisal. Save it along with the repair records and any other relevant evidence.

Do I need to call before requesting an estimate?

No. Complete the online estimate form first. Include your questions with your vehicle and repair details so Austin can review the whole situation together.

What if the insurer says repairs are all it owes?

Ask for its position in writing and preserve the correspondence. An appraisal can address the value question, but it does not decide legal entitlement or require an insurer to accept a demand. Questions about releases, coverage or deadlines belong with qualified legal counsel.

Does structural damage matter for diminished value?

It can be especially important. Ask for documentation of affected structural components, measurements, repair or replacement procedures and the final repair scope. A vehicle can be repaired and still face buyer concerns about its history. The appraisal connects that history to the value of your particular vehicle.

Is a repair estimate the same as a diminished value appraisal?

No. A repair estimate prices the work needed to repair the vehicle. A diminished value appraisal addresses the value lost because of the accident after the repairs are considered. Save both the original estimate and the final invoice; supplements often reveal damage that was not visible at first.

Must I sell my vehicle before asking about diminished value?

You can request an estimate while you still own it. You do not need to trade it in just to begin our review. A written dealer offer may provide useful supporting evidence, but the appraisal also examines the vehicle, repair history and relevant market.

What should I send if the insurer already rejected diminished value?

Include the written denial, repair records and any amount previously offered in the full estimate form. Identify whether you are claiming against the other driver’s insurer or under your own coverage. That lets us address the actual reason for the disagreement and the evidence needed.
